Shoulder pain is common, especially among people who pursue careers in computers, sports, or jobs that require the overuse of shoulders. Other reasons for shoulder pain are arthritis due to aging, formation of myofascial trigger points, injuries caused by a fall, twisting (sprain or strain) of muscle ligaments and other supporting structures of the shoulder, dislocation of shoulder joint, broken bones, inflammation due to injury (bursitis) and radiating pain from the neck.

Shoulder Ache Symptoms

  • General shoulder ache
  • Pain during shoulder movements like raising the arm out to a side or in front of the body, and sharp pain when     trying to reach the back pocket.
  • Sleep disturbance due to pain
  • Sometimes radiating pain to elbow or neck

Shoulder Pain Causes

  • Shoulder Impingement Syndrome: It is a condition that affects the muscles that cover the shoulder and secure     the arm to the shoulder blade (rotator cuff), causing shoulder pain. It occurs mostly in people who are involved      in repeated overhead activities.
  • Weak shoulder muscles
  • Alteration in the synchronized motion of the shoulder blade and arm, during overhead hand motions.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
  • Tendonitis and Bursitis of the Shoulder

Frozen Shoulder
Frozen shoulder is a painful condition, which affects the shoulder joint mobility. The medical term for a frozen shoulder is adhesive capsulitis.

It is a condition in which the glenohumeral joint in the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and stiff due to severe strain or injury. This condition can be very serious, as it restricts motion and causes chronic pain. For some patients, it also disturbs sleep.

In some cases, the position of hand or other physical movements can cause the sudden onset of severe pain, constant or radiating pain and cramps.

The shoulder joint is a ball-and-socket joint. It allows a wide variety of movement in different angles through different muscles. The short and weak capsule and ligaments around the joint makes the shoulder form scar tissue bands called adhesions. The contraction of the capsule and adhesions cause frozen shoulder.

Frozen Shoulder Symptoms
Frozen shoulder shows varied symptoms at different stages. In the initial stage, all the shoulder motion causes pain and thus limits the range of its motion. Then, the sleep is disturbed if the shoulder also has inflammation. In the next stages, the pain gets diminished and the shoulder becomes stiff. If the frozen shoulder is left untreated for a long time, its muscles are shortened and weakened and it becomes immobile.

Frozen Shoulder Causes
A wide array of reasons is attributed for a frozen shoulder. These include:

  • Age: Age-related degenerative changes in the shoulder and surrounding structure can lead to inflammation and     limit the shoulder movements.
  • Trigger-point formation: Trigger point formation on muscles that cover the shoulder (rotator cuff muscles)     or other muscles responsible for shoulder motion, and on neck muscles, can cause severe shoulder pain and     lead to a frozen shoulder.
  • Inflammatory conditions: A patient with inflammatory conditions like bursitis and impingement syndrome is     prone to a frozen shoulder.
  • Tight and imbalanced muscles: There are many muscles which control the shoulder movement. Tight and     weak muscles change the alignment of the shoulder joints and alter the normal bio-mechanical motion,     causing pain and inflammation in and around the joints. Tight muscles or postural changes of the other parts of     the body can also lead to a frozen shoulder. Limited spinal mobility also sometimes affects the normal shoulder     range of motion.
  • Endocrine disorders: Patients with endocrine disorders like diabetes are at particular risk of developing     bilateral frozen shoulder. Other endocrine abnormalities like thyroid problems can also lead to this condition.
  • Shoulder surgery: Patients who undergo a surgery on the shoulder can develop a frozen shoulder joint due to     long immobility.
